Dementia is a cognitive disease that is characterized by loss of brain abilities and function. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Symptoms of Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease typically start when the patent is over the age of 60. Cognitive decline, such as the ability to think properly and loss of memory, are the overriding issues. More specifically, impaired memory, loss of communication skills, loss of language skills, poor reasoning and poor judgement are symptoms to watch for. Unfortunately, these cognitive diseases are degenerative and progressive, meaning that they tend to worsen over time.

It is important to note that not all memory problems that occur with age are necessarily dementia. Many seniors have trouble with memory regardless of whether or not they suffer from any form of dementia.
